ABOUT THE GAME
Backgammon belongs to a long-standing family of dice-driven racing games. Similar boards and dice games left records across several regions in the ancient and medieval world, and today’s rules took shape through a long process of evolution.
The dice decide how far you can move at any moment, but players still have to judge how to allocate those numbers, protect their checkers and weigh risk — luck and strategy stay intertwined throughout.

Complete beginner guide
Read these steps in order to complete your first game. This guide combines public rules with this site’s server implementation; where versions differ, this site’s ruling applies.
Each player has fifteen checkers moving around twenty-four points in opposite directions, aiming to bring every checker into their own home board and bear them all off. The server rolls two dice each turn; rolling doubles lets you play that number four times.
The two numbers are normally played as two separate moves, though the same checker may use both, as long as every individual step is legal. For example, rolling a 3 and a 5 lets you move one checker 3 points and another 5 points. This site lets you choose the order in which you use the numbers.
A point held by two or more enemy checkers cannot be entered. A point held by exactly one enemy checker can be hit, sending it to the bar. If you have a checker on the bar, you must re-enter it using an available die roll before making any other move.
You can only bear off once all of your checkers are in your home board and none remain on the bar. This site has no doubling cube and does not force you to search for a sequence that uses every possible die value — doubling, gammons and similar tournament details do not apply to games on this site.
